Our Community Initiatives

Philabundance

Our restaurants work with Philabundance to prevent food waste and provide food security to Philadelphians in need.

Since the inception of the program in March 2019 and through 2024, a total of 161,962 pounds of food has been rescued from airport restaurants and “grab-and-go” locations. Philabundance calculates that this amounted to approximately 141,500 meals.

Recycling & Sustainability

We encourage all of our employees, passengers, stores and restaurants to ‘go green’ as much as possible.

Our Programs:

  • Single-Stream Recycling
  • Electronic Waste
  • LED Lighting
  • Fryer Oil
  • Metal Waste

These programs average more than $143,348 in annual savings.

Single-stream Recycling

With single-stream recycling, all recyclable items are “commingled” (instead of sorted at the source by passengers and employees). The commingled recyclables are then sorted and processed for recycling by the hauler. Single-stream recycling is utilized in food courts and in all retail and food & beverage locations throughout the airport.

Electronic Waste

MarketPlace PHL facilitates recycling stores’ “e-waste” (computers, cash registers, phones, etc.), estimated at 1,250 pounds per year.

Led Lighting

MarketPlace PHL has replaced more than 1,000 traditional lightbulbs with LED lightbulbs that are more energy efficient and longer-lasting. These LED lightbulbs save up to $35,000 in electricity costs every year.

Fryer Oil

MarketPlace PHL works with Waste Oil Recyclers, Inc., a locally based company that collects used fryer oil and processes it for use as biodiesel fuel. Each year, more than 24,000 gallons of fryer oil are collected and converted to more than 15,500 gallons of biodiesel. Recycling rebates and disposal cost savings exceed $62,400 annually.

Metal Waste

MarketPlace PHL recycles assorted metal waste, estimated at 14,000 pounds per year.
